In consultation with NSW Country Rugby Union, Sydney Junior Rugby Union and NSW Rugby Union, the Foundation’s Grants Committee has reviewed a number of impressive scholarship applications, and is pleased to announce that the recipients of the Sir Leslie Herron Rugby Scholarship in 2022 are:

Mr Darcy Brown (nominee of NSW Country Junior Rugby Union)

Mr Oscar Morgan (nominee of Sydney Junior Rugby Union)

Darcy Brown

Darcy is a proud member of the Nelson Bay Junior Rugby Union Club, having played over 100 games for the Club. In addition to becoming a well-respected representative player, Darcy has also completed his referee accreditation, refereeing the younger age groups and assisting with coaching the Club’s U13 girls team.

As a player Darcy is known for his excellent passing game, precise execution of speed and his ability to pick the right time to run, making him a dominant half back who can be called upon to play anywhere in the backline.

Darcy has represented the Hunter Wildfires at both the NSW Country Championships and the NSW State Championships over the past five years and enjoys testing his abilities, relishing the challenge representative Rugby presents. In 2021 Darcy was selected in the NSW Country Under 15s side and

was invited to attend a training camp in January as part of the NSW Waratahs Gen Blue squad.

The Herron Scholarship will assist Darcy to access expert Rugby tuition and alleviate the burden of travelling expenses, thus allowing him to focus on his Rugby development.

Oscar Morgan

Oscar is a dedicated student of the game, arranging additional skills and fitness training, in addition to his club, school and work commitments.

Having started his Rugby at five years of age with the Clovelly Eagles, Oscar’s commitment to the game and the improvement of his skills were rewarded in 2021 when he was selected for the Sydney U18 team while still 16 and in year 11 at Marcellin College in Randwick. This selection led to an invitation to play for the Randwick Opens team, who subsequently won the State Championship. The successful campaign saw Oscar play in all matches and score a number of tries, including in both the semi-final and grand final.

Following the Championships Oscar was honoured to be selected in the NSWRU Juniors U18s. Unfortunately, the arranged fixtures were cancelled when the covid pandemic caused a suspension on community sport.

During the 2022 pre-season Oscar trained with the Randwick Academy, and has been invited to join the Elite Randwick Colts Training Program.

The Herron Scholarship will allow Oscar to further develop his Rugby whilst balancing the rigors of HSC study.

The Foundation would like to wish Darcy and Oscar every possible success in furthering their Rugby aspirations while embracing the values of past scholarship recipients: citizenship, scholarship, and a contribution to Rugby.

The Primary Object of the Foundation is to encourage the sport of Rugby in the State of New South Wales and elsewhere at a grassroots level. The Board of Directors of the Foundation has resolved that there is no more fitting way in which to demonstrate the Foundation’s commitment to grassroots Rugby than to continue to award the Sir Leslie Herron Rugby Scholarships for the benefit of Junior Rugby participants.
