Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team 2024 Season Launch
Originally established in 1991 as a Rugby based organisation to provide opportunities and education to enrich the lives of indigenous children, the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team (the Lloydies) has significantly shaped the Rugby landscape and had a profound impact on the broader First Nations community.
Through sports camps and mentoring projects, the Lloydies program has successfully improved the welfare and health of young individuals, enabling them to reach their full potential. The Lloydies' dedication to empowering young athletes and fostering community development has been instrumental in creating a positive and transformative impact on our society. Named in honour of the late Lloyd McDermott, a Wallaby and barrister, the Lloydies have for more than 32 years been pursuing their mission of increasing First Nations’ participation in Rugby, and thereby paving the way for greater diversity and inclusivity within the sport.
The Rugby Club Foundation and the Lloydies continue to enjoy a mutually rewarding and supportive relationship which can be traced back to when the concept of the Lloydies was created amongst likeminded members of The Rugby Club, including then Rugby Life Member Lloyd McDermott.
This enduring relationship was most recently exhibited at the Lloydies 2024 Season Launch on 8 February. When citing the Foundation’s financial support of the Lloydies through the Foundation’s Grants program, Foundation Chairman, Angus Bruxner presented Lloydies President, Tom Evans and Lloydies Board Member, Phillipa McDermott with a magnum of 2006 Penfolds Grange signed by Marcia, Gary, Mark, and Glen Ella. This bottle of Grange had remained in the hands of the Foundation following the closure of The Rugby Club in December 2016, and its presentation to the Lloydies will fulfil a wonderful purpose and achieve a rewarding outcome when it is auctioned at the upcoming Lloydies Annual Dinner.
